Physical Wellbeing

At GSSC, our Physical Wellbeing Curriculum is based on a combination of Real PE and Special Olympics Motor Activity Training Programme (MATP). Through our Physical Wellbeing Curriculum, we are working to develop to fundamental movements for each pupil to improve their coordination, balance, agility and dexterity. They are encouraged to think about how and why they are moving their bodies and the small changes which improve their performance. Strategic planning and adaptation, including input from Conductive Education across the curriculum levels, allows for seamless learning for students with a discrepancy between cognitive learning and physical ability. Allowing for full access to the Physical Wellbeing curriculum alongside their peers.

Our Investigators and Researchers are following an adapted version of Real PE, which enables us to work on the fundamental movement skills included in the Real PE structure. Through Real PE, we are also working on the Learning Behaviours. These organised into the areas of Cognitive, Creative, Social, Personal, Health and Fitness and Applying Physical. These areas run through each unit and teach the abilities required for good team-work, following rules and gamesmanship as well as the effects of exercise on their bodies. The structure of the curriculum allows pupils to be learning about the same strand at their individual levels.

Our Detective and Explorer learners are working on individual movement programmes involving a combination of postural management programmes as advised by Physiotherapists, Conductive Education and MATP. During MATP, the pupils are working to learn physical skills which will have an ongoing impact on their lives (e.g. grasping or releasing an object or stepping in their walking frame) as well as body awareness and proprioception. These outcomes are planned on an individual basis to meet the pupils needs.
